The History of Johansen Individualised Auditory Stimulation

Dr. Kjeld Johansen has been working with and developing the Johansen IAS programme since the 1970s and has trained many groups in Europe, Australasia and America. To learn more about Dr. Johansen and his work click here.

Johansen IAS was first introduced to the UK in 1994 and annual training courses for professionals with relevant qualifications have been run in England, Scotland or Ireland since then. By the end of 2010 there were around 80 Providers working with this programme in the UK and Ireland. Some Providers have worked with many hundreds of children and/ or adults, while others with fewer.

In addition to the UK and Ireland there are qualified Johansen IAS Providers currently working in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Luxemburg, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA.

National Directors

In addition to Denmark, National Directors have now been appointed by Dr. Kjeld Johansen for 17 additional countries where Johansen IAS is well established – Australia, Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA, with some National Directors having responsibility for more than one country. It is expected that this group will be extended in due course.

The first Johansen IAS International Conference was held in August 2007 in the Azores when the National Directors met for 3 days to discuss International Protocols, Aims and Standards. Working groups were established to look at Professional Standards, Training and Research to ensure equity of service wherever Johansen IAS is delivered.

The group met again in August 2008 on Kjeld Johansen’s island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, in Finland in 2009 and in Italy in 2011. Regular meetings in the future are envisaged to further develop this work with the next meeting planned for Spain in 2013.
